At the time you make arrangements to have gastric sleeve surgery, your bariatric surgeon will speak with you in length about what’s expected of you in the days, weeks, and months following your procedure. First, you’ll be provided with post-op diet instructions that will help your stomach and body adjust to the changes made to your body during gastric sleeve surgery.
For the first few days after surgery, you’ll be required to consume liquids only as your body grows accustomed to your smaller stomach. After the liquid diet phase, you can transition to eating pureéd foods, and then to solid foods as your body continues to heal.
Considering a healthy diet and good nutrition are highly important for the rest of your life after gastric sleeve surgery, your bariatric surgeon may require you to attend follow-up appointments so he or she can check up on how you’re adjusting to your new, healthy lifestyle. Some bariatric surgery clinics provide you with access to a nutritionist or dietitian who can help you become more familiar with good nutrition and healthy eating habits in the weeks and months following surgery.
