At the time you make arrangements to have gastric sleeve surgery, your bariatric surgeon will speak with you in length about what’s expected of you in the days, weeks, and months following your procedure. First, you’ll be provided with post-op diet instructions that will help your stomach and body adjust to the changes made to your body during gastric sleeve surgery.

For the first few days after surgery, you’ll be required to consume liquids only as your body grows accustomed to your smaller stomach. After the liquid diet phase, you can transition to eating pureéd foods, and then to solid foods as your body continues to heal.

Considering a healthy diet and good nutrition are highly important for the rest of your life after gastric sleeve surgery, your bariatric surgeon may require you to attend follow-up appointments so he or she can check up on how you’re adjusting to your new, healthy lifestyle. Some bariatric surgery clinics provide you with access to a nutritionist or dietitian who can help you become more familiar with good nutrition and healthy eating habits in the weeks and months following surgery.

Gastric sleeve surgery is often performed as a minimally invasive procedure that results in less downtime, less pain, and faster healing and recovery for patients. Instead of having open surgery, which is associated with a higher number of risks and complications, patients can benefit from laparoscopic surgery, during which the surgeon makes a series of tiny incisions at various sites versus one long incision across the abdominal region.

A young girl’s weight-loss success

A young girl’s weight-loss success

It can be difficult to be a parent of a child who is overweight, especially when you feel as though you can’t do anything about it. Alexis Shapiro’s mother Jenny wanted to see her daughter become mobile again after brain surgery caused Alexis to gain excess weight.

“I was just holding onto hope,” Jenny told Yahoo Parenting. “This was our last resort.”

Jenny took Alexis in to undergo sleeve gastrectomy one year ago in an attempt to reduce the 150 pounds she had gained on her small frame. Alexis was 13 years old at the time of surgery, and has since lost an impressive 60 pounds.

“We’re just so excited,” said Jenny. “It’s great to see her move around better and be happier and be part of the family more -- all because of her weight loss. Her life isn’t consumed by thinking about food anymore.”

Read more about Alexis’ journey on Yahoo Parenting.

Why should you choose gastric sleeve surgery?

Why should you choose gastric sleeve surgery?

The following is an excerpt from our ebook, Gastric sleeve surgery for weight loss. Click here to download the complete ebook.

Gastric sleeve surgery is ideal for individuals who have encountered difficulty keeping weight off with weight loss through diet and exercise. Gastric sleeve surgery can also help individuals reverse one or more comorbidities related to carrying excess weight, such as type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, joint pain and arthritis, and much more. Plus, bariatric surgery helps many patients boost their self-esteem and self-confidence as they continue to lose excess weight and feel better about themselves in the months and years following surgery.

Compared to other weight-loss surgeries, gastric sleeve surgery is often considered less invasive since the stomach is simply made smaller and there is no need for rerouting of the small intestine. Additionally, gastric sleeve surgery does not require the insertion of foreign devices into the body, such as with the LAP-BAND and REALIZE Band gastric banding procedures.

A study published in a 2013 issue of Annals of Surgery found that patients who undergo gastric sleeve surgery fare better from a safety standpoint in the months and years following surgery. When compared to other types of bariatric surgeries, gastric sleeve surgery shows

improved weight-loss results, improved remission rates of comorbidities, and overall better quality of life for patients. Gastric sleeve surgery is associated with fewer risks than other weight-loss surgeries, and is a widely accepted practice in a bariatric medical setting.
