Reflections

I was in a relationship with my now ex-husband for all of my 20s. During those 10 years, I lost and gained weight more times than I care to remember. There was really no pattern. Sometimes I gained weight when I was happy, sometimes I gained weight when I was clinically depressed. Sometimes I lost weight during those same moods. I went on the "divorce diet" and lost about 20 pounds, but later regained that weight and a lot more.

Eighteen months ago, I had gastric-bypass surgery. I'm pretty much a veteran, you know. I made it through the early stages with flying colors. I slowly introduced new foods into my diet like a champ. I exercise regularly and have begun training for a half marathon. And … I recently gained 6 lbs because I wasn't paying attention to what I was eating.

By Catherine Kenealy: Fresh from my workout, I can't believe that I'm coming up on the 18-month anniversary of my surgery. It's difficult for me to believe that it's been so long since my gastric bypass but, some days, it seems much longer ago than just a year and a half. Eighteen months is long enough for me to forget what it was like soon after my surgery.

Setting the Tone

I once read that your New Year’s Eve celebration sets the tone for the upcoming year. That is, how you celebrate at the stroke of midnight will determine the course of the next 12 months. A bunch of baloney? Probably. I spent the last New Year’s Eve on the couch, alone, sniffling my way through yet another sinus infection. My then-boyfriend was visiting his family out of state and I was in no mood to go out.
