The Long Goodbye

By Holly Maust

I haven't quite said goodbye to plus size clothes YET.  I'm anxiously excited for the day when size 14 at Lane Bryant is too big.  I plan on going to my local store and giving them a goodbye party.  Thanks for all the years you clothed me.  Told me I looked sexy when I felt like a big blob. You were there for me and I appreciate that and now we must say goodbye, FOREVER.

Currently, I'm burning through the smaller sizes that I luckily kept stored away.  If you're like me you stored your smaller sizes away in hopes that one day you would win the battle of the bulge.  With each bin I open it's like Christmas all over again.  Little presents to “unwrap”.  The workout clothes, the black dress I loved, size 16…

If you didn't save smaller clothes and are waiting to say goodbye to plus sizes, here are some ideas on how to survive a new wardrobe every month.

1) Sift through thrift stores, I used yelp.com to find the good ones in my area
2) Have a clothing swap party with your friends. Invite friends who are many different sizes.
3) Craiglist can be your friend. There is a section for clothing for sale.
4) For your suits –find a tailor and have them altered. Why buy new ones when you can just make your current ones smaller.
5) Macy's. I know it sounds crazy.  If you get their coupons and they can be used for clearance, you'll get a bargain on great clothes.
6) Sewing.  You can take lessons at a store like Jo-Ann Fabric and then make and alter your own clothes along the way.

For some of us the goodbye from plus size clothes might be long but it doesn't have to be painful.  Whether you kept your smaller clothes or need to get new ones, there are options out there for you.  I look forward to hearing the way you get through the goodbye.

I love thrift stores! I still shop at them and I'm 18 months post-op. I also built my interim wardrobe around basics from Wal-Mart. I wore a lot of simple long-sleeve t-shirts and khakis/jeans. I went on a cruise last spring and even found formal dresses for under $20 each on eBay. Bargain shopping is fun!
