In this week's Weight Loss Surgery News, learn about the benefits of probiotics for gastric bypass patients. Probiotics are bacteria that promote healthy digestion and are commonly found in foods like yogurt and miso soup. A new study shows that probiotics may help weight loss surgery patients maintain higher levels of vitamin B12 and also lose more weight after surgery.

Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine examined 44 gastric bypass patients for 3 months following surgery. Those who took probiotics showed higher levels of vitamin B12 than those who took placebos. The probiotic group also lost 48% of their excess weight while the placebo patients lost only 38%. Vitamin B12 is essential to maintaining a healthy metabolism, which may explain why the probiotics group lost more weight.

Also learn about a coalition of obesity experts who are urging Congress to consider the needs of obese Americans as health care reform continues to be debated, and the results of 50 teenagers who underwent weight loss surgery.
