How It All Got Started
Creating mybiglife.com has been a dream of mine for several years now. It is really exciting to see it get off the ground and start building steam, thanks in large part to the hard work of our exceptional development and content teams. I thank them very much for being here and being a part of rolling out this new, very different kind of bariatric portal.
My firm, BIGSHOT, an advertising and marketing agency in Kansas City MO (www.thinkbigshot.com), has been working with bariatric surgeons and patients for nearly 5 years. In that time we have learned much about WLS patients, surgeons, nurses, care givers, and the friends and family that provide support along the journey. The one common thread through all of the people that we met is real excitement and passion to help people change their lives for the better. People say that sports fans can be rabid. I have learned even the most die hard Cubbies fans don't have anything on a bandster turned WLS evangelist! I can't say that I blame them. If I had changed my life so drastically for the better, I too would want to shout it from the rooftops. We are proud to say that mybiglife.com is a place where you can do that. mybiglife.com is completely funded by BIGSHOT and any advertising revenue we may receive. Our website currently hosts Chitika Premium sponsored search ads and links, which are shown to users that came to mybiglife.com through a search engine. We do not control these advertisements, nor is our content influenced by any advertisers or sponsors that are being shown by Chitika.
What Does mybiglife.com Mean
Even our name is different! We know that being a WLS patient is more than just protein supplements, fills and support groups. You told us that you want to discuss relationships, fashion, and politics. You want to talk about intimate issues that revolve around your weight loss. You want to be recognized for more than just being a WLS patient. This is why you won.t find only the same old content about WLS at mybiglife.com. We are reaching out to Experts in fashion, sex, relationships, politics, and more to bring you information that is important and relevant to you as you live your life and go through your journey. You ARE more than just a WLS patient at mybiglife.com.
How Are We Different
When we started doing the research necessary to taking on a project of this size, we found all kinds of bariatric sites on the web. Some were tiny home grown sites and others, corporate and very professional. As we looked into each of these sites we found that they all had, in some form, valuable information but the sites were islands floating out on the web, alone. That.s understandable but the web is evolving into a more communicative place and mybiglife.com is going to challenge the online bariatrics community to think differently about how we come together online.
Additionally, online bariatric communities are mostly focused on hooking up new patients with surgeons. The surgeons pay a fee to be listed on the site and the site makes money developing content and driving potential patients to the site to find the surgeon listings. It.s a good model that well serves potential patients, surgeons and the listing website. While we are doing the same thing, we are also committed to building a support community around these potential patients by offering Buddy profiles for family and friends of WLS patients to cheer them on along their journey.
So What Does This Mean For YOU
Combine that with thousands of bariatric and plastic surgeon profiles and you have a real powerhouse of a community. Plus, we provide Facebook Connect to all new users allowing them to join the mybiglife.com community using their established Facebook account. The program syncs up the new users Facebook and mybiglife.com profiles so that they do not have to manage yet another online profile. Research has shown that WLS patients that get involved in an active support group or community after surgery do far better than those who do not. We are striving to make mybiglife.com that place to find peer support, great advice from experts and ultimately personal success!
