When she was 30 years old, Jennifer attempted suicide due to feeling depressed and being overweight. Shortly afterward, Jennifer was dropped by her record label due to being too overweight to star in music videos, which were becoming increasingly popular at the time. Jennifer was also constantly being humiliated for being overweight. She states that one year, the New York Post had written that she had broken a chair at a birthday party, which was untrue, but embarrassing for Jennifer just the same.
In an effort to lose weight after her failed suicide attempt, Jennifer tried a string of fad diets. While on her mission to drop pounds, Jennifer received a letter from Barbra Streisand, who instructed her not to lose weight because it would mean losing her voice and identity in the process. However, in the end, Jennifer chose her health and finally decided to undergo the Fobi Pouch gastric bypass procedure in 1990.
Following her Fobi Pouch surgery, Jennifer managed to lose a drastic amount of weight, which she has worked hard to keep off over the years. She has even joked about not having the opportunity to be a spokesperson for Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers because of her now slim size.
In the years following bariatric surgery, Jennifer went on to release a number of music albums, and remains active in the music business today.
