Bariatric group compiles weight loss surgery cookbook

Bariatric group compiles weight loss surgery cookbook

A group of women in a northern California bariatric support group have compiled a bariatric-friendly cookbook full of recipes for different stages of the WLS experience.

The 150-page booklet, Recipe for Success, was put together by four members of the Bariatric Buddies support group in Chico, CA. The book contains appetizers, snacks, salads, soups, main dishes, and desserts that are broken down into five categories: pre-surgery, post-surgery, weeks after surgery, months after surgery, and one year after surgery. Nell Stephens, one of the book’s authors, says the women requested favorite recipes from other patients to assemble the collection.

The four women met monthly for more than a year to test recipes, and the nutritional quality of each dish was conducted by nutrition students at Chico State University. The group also received advice from a registered nurse and a bariatric surgeon.

Common ingredients in the recipes include non-fat cheese and milk, egg substitutes, sugar substitutes, and a medical-quality whey protein powder called Unjury.

The group is working on a sequel, which will contain seasonal recipes, ethnic dishes, and special occasion foods.

Recipe for Success sells for $21.95 and can be purchased from North Valley Surgical Associates, 530- 891-1651.

Mayo Clinic's Action Guide To Weight-Loss Barriers

A new weight-loss action guide from Mayo Clinic provides easy-to-use strategies for guiding individuals past rough spots in their weight-loss program. The Mayo Clinic Diet provides suggestions for overcoming three different types of weight-loss barriers: behavior, nutrition, and physical activity.

Behavior obstacles include thought patterns such as “I’ve tried to lose weight before but it didn’t work,” “I eat when I’m stressed, depressed, or bored,” and “When I go to parties, I can’t resist all of the snacks and hors d’oeuvres.” For each scenario, the book provides concrete action steps you can immediately take to move past the barrier.

The book is divided into two phases: Lose It! and Live It!, both designed to help people lose weight and maintain weight loss without fad diets or complicated eating restrictions.

High-priced weight-loss programs struggled in 2009, with more people opting for do-it-yourself diets. Though the weight-loss industry grew by 2% in 2009, that’s significantly less than a historical 6% or higher annual growth.

The number of dieters who opted for at-home regimes rose from 70% to approximately 78%, creating an opportunity for non-traditional players to enter the diet market.

Companies such as Kraft and Jell-O developed items that are lower in calories and sugar; even fast-food restaurants such as Dunkin’ Donuts and Taco Bell have been promoting healthier menu items in an attempt to lure dieters. And Planters has brought back Mr. Peanut in a series of ads that feature the character engaging in healthy activities, such as yoga.
