Bariatric Surgery: a year long journey

kruseFive years ago, Laura Kruse began contemplating weight loss surgery. She had struggled with her weight most of her life, and diets weren’t working. Her weight made it hard for her to perform her job and other daily activities. She knew something needed to change.

Gaining support from her family was a key element in Laura’s WLS journey. Her husband and children also made a commitment to start eating differently, and the family decided together that bariatic surgery was the right choice for Laura. With the help of a dietician and a clinical psychologist, Laura began to make changes in her diet and exercise routine.

Just six weeks after her gastric bypass surgery, Laura had lost 50 pounds. She’s optimistic but also realistic about her weight loss. "It's not a cure,” she says. “It's just a tool. It's just a way to get you to the weight you need to be. You still have to watch what you eat and do all those things or you could end up right back where you are."

Laura is allowing a Wisconsin TV station to follow her journey over the course of one year as she adjusts to the changes in her body and continues to develop a new relationship with food.

"I just keep telling myself that nothing is going to taste as good as being healthy is going to feel."
