6 habits practiced by most fit and healthy people

There are several lifestyle factors associated with being fit and healthy, such as getting lots of sleep, making time for enjoyable activities, practicing good nutrition, exercising daily, and having a positive attitude about life.

Focusing solely on nutrition and exercise for weight loss is a great place to start, but the key to becoming healthier and fit is to practice a lifestyle that encourages and welcomes a world of healthy behaviors.

Here are six rewarding habits practiced by most fit and healthy people across the world.

1. Maintain a positive outlook

Everyone has bad days every now and then, but it’s the way you handle these days that will affect your overall well-being. If you can cope with stress in a healthy manner, you may be able to avoid overeating and bingeing on junk food, which are two common stress-related behaviors that can lead to weight gain. Instead of handling stress in a manner that negatively affects your health, consider practicing deep breathing, or head to the gym to burn off frustration. Learn how to let some things go, and take a moment to consider how particular setbacks can help you grow as a person.

2. Make the journey enjoyable

Life is all about enjoying the journey -- not about making yourself suffer until you reach your destination. Keep in mind that weight loss isn’t going to be instant; if it took you about four or five years to become overweight, then it may take you just as long to lose the same amount of weight. Be patient, and find ways that will make your weight-loss journey more enjoyable for you. Do you think having new workout clothes will help you feel more comfortable and motivated? Splurge on new workout gear. Will having the latest dance songs uploaded to your iPod enhance your mood doing workouts? Take time to hunt down and download new workout songs that will keep you moving. Do whatever it takes to make weight loss a fun, enjoyable journey.

3. Choose nourishing foods

Nourishing foods are those that make you feel great overall; they provide you with lasting energy, make you feel light on your feet, improve digestion, improve your mood, and can even help reverse certain health conditions. Don’t eat foods that will make you feel tired and depressed, such as fast food, desserts, salty snacks, and processed foods. Instead, eat fresh fruits and vegetables, lots of leafy greens, healthy fats such as olive oil and nuts, and lean protein such as fish and chicken. The more you eat these types of foods, the more your body will respond positively to your healthy decisions.

4. Take time to relax

Taking time to relax doesn’t make you lazy; it allows you to de-stress and regroup so you can meet your goals more efficiently. Stop obsessing about what you haven’t accomplished, and take time to appreciate what you have accomplished so far, especially in regards to weight loss. Avoid getting caught up in the rat race of life, where other people may stress about things that don’t really matter in the long run.

5. Be accountable for your actions

Some individuals who are overweight, unhappy, or simply stressed out may try blaming others for their downfalls, which can impede the process of weight loss and becoming healthier. Keep in mind that you, and only you, should be held accountable for your actions. Nobody else forces you to overeat or skip the gym to watch television, and nobody forces you to make unhealthy decisions in general. Take ownership of your actions, and set yourself on the right path, going in the right direction. Discipline is essential, and making excuses won’t help you reach your goal of becoming fit and healthier.

6. Be active every day

Physical activity should be a normal part of your lifestyle, including days you can’t make it to the gym. Take pride in knowing you can park farther away from the store, and not only get more exercise, but make it into the doors sooner than those who are still driving around the parking lot looking for an open space near the front. Take pride in knowing you can walk up flights of stairs without feeling winded, while other people waste time waiting around for the elevator. If you find ways to be more active every day, you’ll realize that it soon becomes part of your everyday lifestyle.
