A statement released on Wednesday said, "Contrary to reports in the press this morning, Air France is not planning to force corpulent passengers to pay for a second seat."
Instead, the airline announced the beginning February 1, overweight passengers who had voluntarily purchased a second seat would receive a refund if the flight was not full.
Air France has offered overweight passengers a discount on a second seat since 2005, but the purchase has never been obligatory, Air France spokesman Jean-Pierre Lefebvre said.
