Making New Year's resolutions stick

The secret to success when it comes to sticking to your New Year’s resolutions is to start small, be realistic, and establish clear objectives that are easily measurable, such as tracking inches and pounds lost, and improvements in blood cholesterol levels, blood pressure readings, and more.

Set specific goals

Personal achievement experts say that you must know what your goals are in order to achieve them. Those who are vague with their resolutions will rarely stick to them. For example, if your resolution is to improve your overall health, be specific with how you want to do so, such as making a goal to eat vegetables with every meal and exercising for at least 20 minutes per day, 5 days per week.

Be as realistic as possible

After having LAP-BAND surgery, you may be tempted to compare your weight-loss progress to other LAP-BAND patients who have shared their own success stories. Keep in mind that each patient’s lifestyle and health history differs, and whereas it may have taken others under a year to lose weight, it may take you longer. Instead, set realistic goals that are challenging for you, specifically. Is exercise a challenge for you? If so, start small by limiting yourself to between 15 and 20 minutes of walking per day, and increase that amount to between 20 and 25 minutes after a few weeks have passed.

Write down your goals

Writing down your goals makes them official, similar to a contract, and also helps them stick to your mind subconsciously. Write all your goals in present tense and in a positive tone on a daily basis to make yourself stay focused on them. For example, write “I have lost 3 inches around my waist,” instead of “I will no longer have a large waistline.”

Set realistic due dates

Establishing due dates fore your weight-loss goals is extremely effective — but only if you make your due dates realistic. For example, if you want to lose 50 pounds during the month of January but haven’t exercised in years and haven’t yet altered your diet, hitting your goal may not be as easy as you think. Instead, set realistic due dates, and enlist the help of your nutritionist or bariatric surgeon if necessary.

Be wise and smart about your New Year’s resolutions this year while becoming thinner, happier, and healthier in the process. Then, at the end of next year, you can set new goals beyond weight loss, such as participating in local fun runs, or purchasing an attractive new wardrobe that will show off your weight-loss achievements from the previous year.
