During surgery, your bariatric surgeon will insert a tiny camera and several surgical instruments into each of the incisions in order to conduct the surgery. Approximately 85 percent of your stomach will be cut away and removed to leave behind a thin, vertical pouch about the size of a medium banana. The incisions are then closed, and will heal relatively quickly after surgery given their small size.
In most cases, gastric sleeve surgery takes about one hour to complete, and results in very little downtime. Your bariatric surgeon will then release you from the hospital or clinic so you can spend time recovering in the private comfort of your own home.
