Spending time in social settings can be challenging for those who are trying to lose weight. Parties, happy hours, work meetings, and special events such as weddings can offer up many temptations in the way of foods and drinks you probably shouldn’t be consuming if you’re working on becoming healthier. If you’re actively dating, sometimes it may feel as if your diet can get in the way of having fun and getting to know someone.

But, just like with your friends and family members, the people you date should exhibit respect and understanding about your personal health choices without letting it impact your relationship.

If you’ve had weight-loss surgery, or are currently working on losing weight and becoming healthier, check out these four dating tips that will help you stay on track with your goals.

1. Swap alcoholic beverages for tea and coffee

Do you usually meet your dates for alcoholic beverages at a local bar or restaurant? Instead of going to the bar, make plans to go to a coffeehouse instead. Alcoholic beverages, including wine, contain an excessive amount of calories and will alter your hunger hormones the more you end up drinking — resulting in potential overeating and unwise food choices. On the other hand, coffee and tea are far less fattening as long as you go easy on whipped cream, syrup flavors, and caramel. Plus, your inhibitions won’t fall to the wayside if you’re drinking coffee or tea, and you’ll have a better chance at focusing on your date.

2. Make dinner plans

Many singles enjoy meeting their dates for dinner at a nice restaurant. If you’re responsible for choosing the restaurant, choose a place that offers healthy, high-quality food. If you’re not quite sure where your date is taking you, eat a light dinner ahead of time so you’re not faced with making unhealthy choices later on if your date chooses a place that serves less-healthy options. If you know where you’re eating, but have never eaten at that particular restaurant before, take time to review the menu online if possible so you can decide ahead of time what you’ll be eating, and plan your meals accordingly.

3. Host dinner at your place

If you know and feel comfortable with the person you’re dating, invite them over to your place for dinner. Hosting dinner will put you in full charge of the food menu, which allows you to prepare healthy dishes without having to worry about counting calories. Making dinner at home can also help you and your date feel more comfortable with one another as you enjoy each other’s company in a private, relaxing atmosphere.
