Year after year, new fad diets are introduced to the American population that tout promises of quick weight loss and a slimmer body than ever before. Many of those who fall under the spell of fad diets may feel disappointment when new diets don’t work at all, while those who do experience weight loss end up gaining back all the weight they lost, and then some, a few months down the road.

1. They promote physical activity

All top diets recommend that dieters engage in regular physical activity to maintain weight loss. In most cases, the healthiest diets are comprised of foods that can complement an exercise routine due to the nutrients and energy boosts they provide. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that all Americans exercise for at least 30 minutes per day to promote weight loss.

2. They recommend eating lots of produce

Plant-based diets such as the Mediterranean Diet are comprised mainly of fruits and vegetables, which is why they lead to weight loss. Most Americans are informed by their physicians to consume around five servings of produce per day, but great diets will recommend consuming between seven and nine servings of produce per day. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and are fat-free and low in calories. In fact, you can add produce to your diet without having to cut out any other foods and benefit from both weight loss and improved health.
