Editor's Note

May 28th is National Hamburger Day!   Now I love a good burger and I've even been known to experiment a little too.  So I started looking at all of the options out there to celebrate NHD!
There's beef, pork, sausage, turkey, lamb, chicken, tuna, bean, salmon, portobello and veggie. So no matter if you are a carnivore or a vegan, hate carbs or hate  fat  you're in luck ! Because there are recipes that cover every kind of burger out there.
Let's talk buns: Homemade, artisan, english muffins and even lettuce leaf buns or my favorite, bun free burgers. You're choice!
Toppings are only limited by your imagination.
And if you like ethnic food (I DO!!!) burgers have crossed over into all ethnic categories.

But nothing beats a simple ground beef burger grilled outside a charcoal grill. Plain or piled with toppings? Your choice.

When it comes to burgers, there’s truly something for everyone: all-beef cheeseburgers tucked into toasted buns, turkey burgers piled high with all the fixings, flavor-packed tuna burgers, meatless veggie patties and more. Make them any way you choose – because burgers are guaranteed to please!

Grilled Burgers

Cook hands prepares smoky meat on grill oven

Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds ground beef chuck

Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

Vegetable oil, for the grill

4 soft hamburger buns

Assorted toppings

Directions

  1. Preheat a grill to medium high. Divide the beef into four 6-ounce portions. Gather each into a ball, then gently flatten into a 4 1/2-inch-wide patty about 3/4 inch thick. Press your thumb into the center of each patty to make a 1/2-inch-deep indentation (this prevents the patties from bulging as they cook). Season the patties on both sides with salt and pepper.
  2. Lightly brush the grill grates with vegetable oil, then grill the patties indentation-side up until marked on the bottom, about 5 minutes. Flip and cook until marked and slightly firm, about 3 more minutes for medium doneness.
  3. Remove the burgers to a plate and let rest 5 minutes so the juices redistribute. Serve the burgers on the buns; top as desired.
