Editor's Note

Today August 2nd, is National Doll Day!  Ashley Graham got her likeness made into a Barbie. What a thrill. I LOVED playing with Barbies as a young girl.  It never occurred to me that they didn't exactly represent me.  Ashley expressly wanted here doll to look like her.   NO THIGH GAP THERE!!!   Kudos to her for standing up for a true "MODEL".   And Bravo to BARBIE for making dolls that look more like true females.  Ethnicity, size, color and fashion sense are all represented. What did your barbie look like?    Is there another Barbie that needs to be created?

Hi guys. I’m at the Mattel design center and I am here to design my own. We are designing the outfit, the face, the hair and the body. This could probably is actually the coolest thing I’ve ever done. Let’s go get started. It’s so nice to meet you too. So what’s the process. Walk me through. So this is how we do it. So usually someone, one of the product designers, one of Robert’s team will come to us and they’ll say, Hey, you know, we’re going to do this stall. And this is our inspiration. Like for example, photos, photos, we’d love photos. Yes. We got those photos of you. We thought, Oh, it’s fun. Well, we can kind of start matching your hair color. We looked at different sculps and then we looked at skin tone. So what’s cool about the team here is all of this detail that you see here, the braids and the twists and all these ponytails. They’re all done by hand once. Yeah. So it’s amazing by hand here. And also this is an old school. Cool. A sewing machine or is it new? No. Original sewing machine go. The first quality. This is how they got the hair to the head bar.

Just cut out a little bit for you right now. It’s me. It’s really me. This is so fun. Hi me. I love you. If you want to put her in the oven. Sure. Yes. Let’s see the oven. Where do we go? Where do we go? I’m going to put my head in the oven now. Any, any oven? Any little look like here? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Good bye. So you do every single Barbie had by hand, small things. You like to do this small thing. How long did it take you to do one phase? Right?

Maybe two hours, hour or two hours. Oh my God. So we, this is the sculpting department. So this is the program that we use here. Oh wow. This became, the Golan has what they call happy feedback. As you see the cursor touching the face or the screen, I can actually feel it. It has resistance. It’s pushing back. I can do it. Yeah. This is crazy. It’s so wild. Yeah. Pretty quick. What I requested was that her thighs touch and then I, I asked for cellulite, but I don’t think I’m going to get any, but later when there there’s a lot back there. So this is now, this is less exciting than missing some at all. You actually can do the underwear. This just a little sample. I just, again, teasing and there’s. Oh, can we please talk about it? She has a shear, but Justin, this is so exciting. It’s been such an experience and I cannot wait to see my final doll. I think I’m going to cry. Here we go. Or her thighs touching or touching. Yay.
