So I’m a little late to the avocado toast game.  I didn’t get the appeal. Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE avocado in guacamole with a crunchy tortilla chip. But I wasn’t feeling it for breakfast.   On a girls weekend, with the insistence of my “ever so on-trend'”18-year old niece Katie, I decided to jump in with both feet by making  a variety of avocado toasts to taste test.    “My Girls” were all in.    Here’s how it went:   1. Plain with salt & pepper and a squeeze of lime.   2. Cherry tomatoes with basil, balsamic vinegar and salt & pepper.   3. Mango with a squeeze of lime and chilli powder.   4. Soft poached egg with everything...

As you continue to slim down throughout your weight-loss journey, it’s important that you do strength training along with your cardio routine. While cardio exercise will help you drop pounds, it won’t tone all your muscle groups, which could result in saggy, loose skin. However, combining strength training with cardio exercise will help tone and tighten your skin, and allow you to look your best as you continue to lose weight. If you’re already doing strength training exercises but are failing to see major improvements in muscle tone and definition, it’s possible you need to switch up your routine and work new, different muscle groups. Or, you may need to increase your resistance level and lift heavier weights. No matter what your obstacles may be,...

Everyone knows that one of the main purposes of undergoing weight-loss surgery is to lose weight and become healthier. Patients who have actively sought out weight-loss surgery may have already tried — and failed — to lose weight using traditional means of diet and exercise. In addition to becoming thinner and reversing comorbidities, weight-loss surgery is actually associated with other benefits that many don’t take into consideration, such as a happier life, a longer life, and less stress. Take a look at these three surprising benefits...

Thanks to what we once learned in science class, it’s common knowledge that salt absorbs water and causes water retention. That’s why when we eat foods high in sodium, we may feel bloated and gain weight as a result of the salt in our bodies retaining water. In the United States, the FDA recommends that Americans consume no more than 2,300 milligrams of salt per day. However, the average American consumes about 3,400 milligrams per day, which far exceeds the limits in place by the FDA to ensure good overall health. When we consume salt, our kidneys have to work harder than usual to filter out toxins since the salt is causing our bodies to retain water and flush out less waste. Excess sodium consumption...

It’s true that weight loss can be driven in part by physical lifestyle habits that include eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise, but did you know that your overall attitude toward weight loss also has an impact on your ability to lose weight? Myths and misconceptions about weight loss have been proven to have a negative effect on your ability to lose weight — even if you’re exercising regularly and consuming healthy foods. Several years ago, a psychologist from Harvard performed an experiment on a group of hotel maids to examine how their perception of weight loss affected their ability to lose excess weight. All the maids were overweight, but stayed physically active all throughout the day, which should have been a...

Being overweight can sometimes make your workouts feel uncomfortable and difficult. Perhaps the excess weight you’re carrying around is preventing you from being able to do certain movements, or you’re having difficulty finishing your workout because you’re out of shape. No matter the reason, it can often be tempting to give up midway through your fitness routine because it’s just too hard. It’s important to keep in mind that giving in to quitting will make it easier for you to cut your workout short next time, and the time after that — which can eventually have a devastating impact on your weight-loss goals. If you find that you’re struggling to make it through your exercise regimen, here are six ways you can avoid giving up...

For the last few decades, weight-loss surgery has been considered a last resort for treating overweight and obese individuals who have been unable to lose weight through conventional methods of diet and exercise. But now, considering how weight-loss surgery can help reverse type 2 diabetes, lower the risk for heart disease, and help improve a number of other comorbidities, the procedure is no longer being considered a last resort. Late last month, new guidelines were released that make a higher number of patients eligible for the procedure. The new guidelines qualify patients who have a body mass index (BMI) as low as 30. Previously, the only individuals approved for bariatric surgery were those who had BMIs of 35 and higher. Currently, nearly 35 percent of...
