When you start seeing real weight-loss progress and have either lost inches or pounds, your progress can be enough to motivate you to start working harder. After all, if you’ve seen great results just with your current exercise routine, imagine how much more you can lose if you start working out more often, or more intensely!
While exercise is great for mind and body, doing too much can have the opposite effect. If you can get away with exercising intensely, or twice per day and still feel great on a daily basis, that’s amazing. But if you find yourself constantly feeling tired, worn out, or even sick, then it’s possible you might be overdoing it. Exercise is supposed to leave you feeling alert, energetic, and healthy, but illness could mean that you’re compromising your immune system and not allowing your body to fully heal between workouts.
Here are 10 signs your current fitness routine is just too intense to result in weight-loss and improved wellness.
- You’ve reached a weight-loss plateau. If you’ve suddenly stopped losing weight or building muscle, it’s possible your body rarely has enough time to recover fully between each workout.
- Exercise has become a chore, and is no longer fun. If you’re finding new excuses to skip your workouts, you might need to scale back a bit.
Your sleeping habits have worsened. You’re either having problems falling asleep, or you’re always waking up exhausted. Stop exercising at night before bedtime, or take a day or two to recover if your workouts are high in intensity.
- You’ve become moody and irritable. Exercise is supposed to naturally lift your mood, so you might be overdoing it if you’re always feeling cranky and irritable.
- You become ill more frequently, and it’s difficult to overcome your sickness. If you’ve become sick, your immune system has become compromised, which means you’re most likely too tired and run down from working out too much or too intensely.
- You find yourself craving sweets and junk food even after working out. Cravings for unhealthy foods normally stem from hormonal imbalance, which means you’re either not getting enough sleep or you’re not taking care of yourself.
- Your sexual libido has decreased, or is nonexistent.
- The only time you feel energetic is immediately after your workout, and you feel tired the rest of the day.
- You only feel a sense of accomplishment after working out, even if you’re tired. Missing one workout session ruins your day, or makes you feel as if you’re failing at weight loss.
- You’re putting exercise above all else, including family. While exercise is important, your relationship with exercise may be unhealthy if you’re prioritizing exercise above taking care of your family or spending time with close friends.
- If any of these signs sound familiar, it’s time to scale back and start taking better care of yourself. Exercise less often, or engage in a fitness routine that won’t tear your body down.
