The concept of indulging yourself is often viewed in a negative light when you’re on a diet and fitness plan for weight loss. When most people think about the term “indulging,” they automatically think about overeating or eating large portions of rich chocolate cake, a bag of potato chips, and other fattening food items. However, there are ways you can indulge without going overboard and binge-eating until your diet and fitness plans are completely shot.
Here are three ways you can indulge in a healthy, balanced manner without impacting your waistline:
1. Find a healthy balance
Focus on finding healthy, whole foods to indulge in as opposed to packaged, processed foods. For example, instead of grabbing a chocolate peanut-butter granola bar when you feel the munchies coming on, indulge on a small bowl of strawberries instead. The more you can indulge in healthy, whole foods, the better.
2. Remember that foods aren’t the only items to indulge in
Most people will automatically default to food when they think about indulging in something, but what about indulging in other types of treats that pamper you? Instead of turning to food for once, do something else to indulge yourself. Get a new haircut or pedicure, take a relaxing bubble bath, buy a new book, or spend time with your best friend.
3. Find positive affirmations that work for you
Before indulging, many people will say or think guilty comments or thoughts, especially if they’re trying to lose weight. For example, most will think, “I’ll need to run an extra mile tomorrow to burn off this brownie,” or “Here I go giving into temptation again. I guess I’m not meant to be skinny.” Instead of thinking negative thoughts such as these, find more positive affirmations that work best for you. Start rewarding yourself modestly instead of engorging just for the sake of indulging.
