How to get started on a fitness plan

Making the decision to get in shape is one of the best life choices you can make for yourself.

Not only will exercising help you lose weight and become healthier, but it will improve both your mood and self-esteem.

The main aspect to keep in mind when developing a fitness plan is that exercise is not about the destination, but about the journey, and about ensuring you live a long, healthy life.

Here are five tips you can follow to get started on developing the fitness plan that’s best for you.

Make realistic fitness goals

A common mistake that many fitness newbies make is setting unrealistic goals. If your goals are set too high, you may not be able to reach them in time, which can have a negative influence on your outlook on exercise and fitness. Focus on making short-term fitness goals, such as losing five pounds per month, and go from there. Setting realistic goals will help you stay motivated and on track.

Put your fitness plan in writing

Writing down your fitness plan in a workout calendar will make it easier for you to commit to regular exercise. Put your sessions in your workout calendar, and make plans to follow through just as you do with business meetings and doctor’s appointments. Your workout calendar and fitness plan will only be successful if you’re able to commit to it fully.

Get the proper fitness gear

Your workout gear will make all the difference in your ability to exercise at an optimal level. If your shoes are too uncomfortable, you won’t run too far, and if your clothes are too tight, you’ll be focused more on your comfort level than on your actual workout. Invest in great, quality workout clothing, shoes, and gear so you can focus completely on your workouts without distractions.

Select the ideal workout venue

If you’re unhappy with your workout environment, your workouts won’t be very productive. Would you rather exercise outdoors or at a gym? Do you enjoy working out solo or with a group of people? Take these points into consideration so you can make plans to work out in the environment that’s ideal for you. If you enjoy working out by yourself, perhaps doing workout videos at home or going for a run at the park are your best options. If you enjoy being surrounded by other people, join a gym and attend group exercise classes. The more fun you have and the more comfortable you feel during your workout, the more productive your workouts will be and the more weight you’ll lose.

Put together a music playlist

Studies have proven time and again that listening to music during your workout can get your blood pumping even more and motivate you to push harder. Invest in an iPod or music player and download songs that really get your body moving. Choose songs with fast tempos so you can maintain a higher heart rate off and on throughout your workout.
